A proposed new site for supportive housing and shelter spaces is off Joyce Avenue near Complex Way.

Development of a new supportive housing and shelter building is being proposed for a lot beside qathet General Hospital.

The proposal, a partnership between BC Housing and City of Powell River to help address increased homelessness in the community, is for a facility on city-owned land with 43 single occupant units and 20 shelter spaces.

The facility would provide 24/7 staff support for single adults, seniors and people with disabilities at risk of or experiencing homelessness, according to a media release from the city.

Before the city can consider leasing the proposed site, council must approve bylaws related to rezoning and the permanent closure of this portion of the Complex Way highway dedication.

Neighbouring property owners will receive a letter that includes an invitation to an in-person open-house session to be held on September 11, according to the city.
