BC Ferries has cancelled the planned temporary trial of new fare and reservation options on the Langdale to Horseshoe Bay ferry route.
A media release from BC Ferries states that in a series of consultations held with residents of the lower Sunshine Coast last fall, users of the Langdale ferry voiced concerns about the stress and anxiety of ferry travel, especially in the peak season. The release stated that uncertainty in travel times, long waits at congested terminals and lack of available reservations were also noted as concerns. Participants wanted solutions that would help them plan ahead and make travel easier, according to the release.
In response, BC Ferries proposed a temporary three-and-a-half month trial of new fare and reservation options that may have addressed those concerns. The intent was to test whether concepts of improved customer service in successful use elsewhere in the BC Ferries system would work on the Langdale route, according to the release.
BC Ferries’ plan was that after the trial, results would be reviewed with the community and next steps determined.
“Unfortunately, the proposed trial has become a divisive issue in the community, which certainly was not the intent,” stated president and chief executive officer of BC Ferries Mark Collins. “As a result, we will forego the trial and operate the route in the usual manner this summer. It is evident that the issues are complex and more community conversation is needed before change can be considered. We extend our thanks to the many community leaders and elected representatives for their assistance in considering this proposal.”
