City of Powell River Council has approved an application for a $15,000 grant to support programming for seniors.
At the July 7 city council meeting, councillor Jim Palm said this has been an ongoing endeavour of the city.
“We have received numerous grants in the past,” added Palm. “I think the first one was for $50,000 back in 2016, and then we’ve got a couple of additional grants since that time to support the seniors in our community.
“I’m happy to report that if we are successful in this grant, we will be working with the Cranberry Seniors Centre and their volunteers to get the seniors together program up and running again in September. They’ll start lunches and provide an educational component post-pandemic.”
Councillor Rob Southcott said it’s an awesome program.
Councillor Maggie Hathaway agreed, and said people really enjoy those social lunches and getting together.
“I’m glad to see this going forward,” added Hathaway.
At the July 5 committee of the whole meeting, manager of recreation Neil Pukesh outlined the prospective grant application, seeking approval for grant funding from Union of British Columbia Municipalities’ 2022 age-friendly communities program. The committee gave unanimous consent to send the grant application to council for approval on July 7.
