APPOINTMENTS EXPANDED: City of Powell River now has a nine-member harbour users advisory committee to provide input on matters relating to the three harbours it looks after.

City of Powell River has appointed its harbour users advisory committee.

At the March 21 city council meeting, on the agenda was a rise and report from the March 5 closed committee of the whole meeting, naming the eight non-council members of the committee.

Serving four-year terms with the harbour users advisory committee will be Terry Noreault, Ken Kolba, Rob Bombardir and Jim Parsons. Serving two years will be a representative from the Canadian Coast Guard, Fraser Martynuik, Sasha Van Kessel and Cam Wilson.

The report also stated that councillor Jim Palm had been selected as the member of council appointed to the committee.

Councillor Earl Almeida said the city had originally planned on having a committee of six members of the public, but the list of applicants was so great that council decided to expand the number to eight community members.

“We still had to turn a few away that were fantastic candidates as well,” said Almeida. “I want to thank everyone for putting their applications in. We couldn’t have a committee of 15 people or whatever the number of applicants was.”

Palm said there were a total of 18 applicants for the committee.

“The community is very much interested in informing this committee and having them go to work to make our harbours run as good as possible,” said Palm. “I am looking forward to working with this committee. It will be a labour of love, I can assure you of that.”

Council passed the motion for the appointments unanimously.
