City of Powell River councillors were provided an update on the joint accessibility and inclusion advisory committee at a meeting on December 21. A staff report indicated that the Accessible British Columbia Act was passed in June 2021 and aims to identify, remove and prevent barriers to the full and equal participation of people with disabilities in BC.
All public bodies must establish an accessibility committee, an accessibility plan, and a tool to receive feedback on accessibility. A committee has been formed in accordance with the act, and a joint funding agreement has been entered into with qathet Regional District and Powell River Public Library.
The staff report indicated that since council’s endorsement, the committee was struck with nine voting members and has met twice so far.
