Once you finish decluttering your space, the next step is to install systems to help you stay organized.
When choosing organizing containers, consider adding some personal touch to create the home you love. Stores are full of plastic containers. Is that your way of organizing and keeping your home functional, or do you prefer baskets and old-fashioned boxes from grandma's time? Check out thrift stores for a great selection of old-fashioned things.
When your home is organized with your personal touch, it tells a story of who you are. Why settle for plain when you can add a touch of your personality? Here’s how to boost your organizing undertaking up a notch:
Display collections
Group your books by category or author, then display something decorative beside them. Maybe a small globe with travel books or vintage bookmarks with classic novels. Show off some of the souvenirs from your favourite places.
Incorporate baskets
Choose baskets made from natural materials. Woven seagrass baskets add the feel of the beach, antique crates bring country appeal and colourful fabric bins can brighten any space.
A friend gifted me with an old apple crate. I used to hold cozy blankets and throws. It’s a purposeful item with charm.
Label with flare
Ditch the basic and boring labels. Use chalkboard labels for a farmhouse feel, wooden tags for a natural look, or even handwritten labels in a fun font on colourful cardstock.
Use surprising items
Repurpose items for storage. Mason jars are perfect for storing craft supplies or bathroom essentials. An old-fashioned suitcase can become handy for under-bed storage.
Create a stylish closet
Make dressing easier by arranging a closet like your favourite boutique. Organize by putting together your favourite outfits; pants or skirts with a sweater, blouse or jacket. Now you are ready to go. Use matching hangers for an updated look.
Functional focal point
One of my clients installed an attractive and practical pegboard. It holds keys, sunglasses, reusable shopping bags and even a small hanging plant. It’s both a practical and a statement piece.
Display with intention
Instead of keeping your heirlooms in dusty boxes, consider displaying them in your living room. Use grandma's candleholders, tea cups or flower pots to add a characteristic look.
Keep it humorous
Add unexpected touches, such as peculiar knobs on storage cabinets, colourful hooks for keys or fun containers for everyday items. I once helped a retired court judge organize his home. He wanted this Norman Wisdom quote displayed at the entrance: “As you get older, three things happen. The first is your memory goes, and I can’t remember the other two.” He made his guests comfortable even before they took a seat.
Keep your home functional and fun.
