Exhibit opens on Savary Island

Show features three landscape painters

A new gallery space on Savary Island will host an upcoming exhibit of some of Powell River’s most celebrated artists.

The show is entitled Uncultivated Ground: Paintings from a Common Edge and will feature the work of landscape painters Rick Cepella, Barbara Langmaid and Megan Dulcie Dill.

The trio teaches visual arts at Powell River Academy of Music.

“Rick and Barb and myself have worked together for the last couple of years and we, as painters, end up working a lot in our own studios, so it’s a way for us to get together,” said Dulcie Dull. “We all have the same aesthetic.”

Their work will be on display from July 19 to 21 at a newly completed gallery space at Pascal’s Hacienda which is located one block from Riggers Pub-Style Restaurant at Vancouver Boulevard and Brian’s Way within walking distance of the dock.

The idea for the show grew out of an ongoing conversation the painters have had about living on the Sunshine Coast at “the end of the road” and how Powell River’s landscape engages them.

Dulcie Dill explained in a blog post about the show that she and her co-exhibitors share “a commitment to pushing the boundaries,” and “while all three draw from the environment in which they have landed, each approaches the view from different angles.”

Cepella described Pascal’s Hacienda as a “community centre” with a lot of wall space and “quite aesthetically pleasing with a lot of stained glass.” This will be the first art show inside Pascal’s Hacienda, though last year the owner hosted a few shows outside in the surrounding yard.

While the show starts on Friday, July 19, a reception is planned from 3 to 5 pm Saturday, July 20 and will include music and refreshments.
