Townsite to host outdoor painting event in September

Plein air was central to French Impressionism in the nineteenth-century

Before the nineteenth-century, painting outdoors was not a usual practice. However, with the invention of easily transportable paints in tubes, that changed.

French impressionist painters such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Claude Monet embraced and advocated for artists to paint “en plein-air” as said in the French language, or for English speakers: painting outdoors.

Townsite Heritage Society is inviting painters and artists (novice and experienced) for an all day plein-air event in Townsite on Saturday, September 9. This will be the first official event of its type in qathet.

“The event will span the day, offering artists the opportunity to create works of art inspired by the historic buildings, streets and natural landscapes throughout the neighbourhood,” said Townsite Heritage Society president Tracey Bellmane. “Visitors will have the chance to watch the artists at work, purchase their artwork and participate in other activities such as tours and workshops.”

The historic Townsite neighbourhood boasts elegant, well-maintained heritage houses, colourfully designed gardens and easily walkable tree-lined streets, and perfect places to sit with an easel and paint the landscape or be an observer. The tight-knit Townsite community has worked hard to maintain the historic value of the area while at the same time continuing to stay relevant, by welcoming residents and tourists to experience the unique district and what it offers.

“We believe that this event will not only showcase the beauty of the historic Townsite, but also bring economic benefits to local businesses, including art galleries, restaurants, and shops,” said Bellmane. “It is our hope that this event will attract tourists from throughout the region, further promoting our town and its many attractions during the start of shoulder season for tourism.”

The Historic Townsite en Plein Air endeavours to provide an opportunity for local artists to showcase their skills and to promote the area as a hub for artists and enthusiasts.

“The public is encouraged to come and try their hand at painting any of the many wonders of the historic Townsite,” added Bellmane.

In the words of impressionist painter Edgar Degas: “Painting is easy when you don’t know how, but very difficult when you do.”

After folks have painted outdoors they can join fellow artists for a casual Beer and Banter social gathering at Townsite Brewing.

Plein-air events happen around the world, including in BC. To find out more and to register for the event in Townsite, email
