With spring around the corner, the Powell River Farmers’ Institute is preparing to host Seedy Saturday, March 9, at Powell River Recreation Complex.
Doors open from 10 am to 3 pm for the community seed swap and garden fair. The top foyer and its meeting rooms will fill with seed and garden product vendors plus community information tables about plants, bees, worms and more. Adult admission for the event is $2 and children under 12 get in for free.
There will be eight garden-related workshops throughout the day covering a wide range of topics. Workshops include: seed saving for fun and profit, soil health and compost making, gardening in small spaces, winter gardening, wild weeds as medicine, climate change and agriculture and keeping backyard poultry.
Everyone is welcome to swap or buy seeds, gardening books and magazines. This year, there is a special display about how to keep poultry, now that the City of Powell River has amended its animal bylaw to permit three poultry on any size of city lot. An urban hen house is even part of this year’s silent auction.
Family Place will again run a fun-filled activity centre for children. The centre is right next to where the Seedy Cafe dishes up eats and treats, so parents can keep their eyes on their children, while enjoying a snack or meal.
