Lights, camera, action!
Cast and crew members of the Brooks Theatre Company performed the Musical Theatre International rendition of Mamma Mia! from May 12 to 15 at Max Cameron Theatre, including three evening performances and one matinee.
The production was the first for the company since 2019 and featured four shows with two full casts.
“I made the decision to go to a double cast for two reasons,” said Jen Didcott, director of the theater company. “First is in response to the pandemic, we embarked on the process of creating Mamma Mia! during very turbulent and unknown times with the omicron variant rearing up. I prefer to double cast for the well-being of my students; it fosters more supportive relationships in the cast than an understudy scenario.”
Didcott said words cannot express the roller coaster of emotions felt by everyone involved while pulling the final elements of the show together.
“I am so relieved and grateful that we are able to perform live and in the way Mamma Mia! should be performed,” she added. “Our cast and crew have worked tirelessly for two semesters and they deserve all the accolades for their achievements.”
The sold out Friday performance from the cast was electric, with die-hard ABBA fans in the audience seen grooving to the songs in their seats.
Laughter, great songs, stunning costumes and fun choreography were prominent throughout the performance, as was enough of a comedic element to keep the audience engaged throughout the evening and afternoon shows.
The audience responded with a standing ovation after an unforgettable ABBA experience, as a way to say “Thank You for the Music.”
