Powell River groups provided funding through provincial program

Not-for-profit organizations receive grants

PROVINCIAL MONEY: Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons announced a number of grants that will help several organizations throughout Powell River.

Powell River-Sunshine Coast MLA Nicholas Simons has indicated the government’s continued support for local not-for-profit organizations will help deliver important social services to people and families during the pandemic.

“We are so fortunate along the Sunshine Coast to have great organizations working hard to benefit the people of our communities,” stated Simons in a media release. “From hospice services to youth and child care supports to outdoor programs, they keep our communities strong and resilient. I’m glad to see they will receive continued support and be there for us as we recover from this pandemic.”

The $503,700 for 32 service delivery grants on the Sunshine Coast is part of nearly $61 million being distributed to more than 1,400 human and social services sector organizations across BC, according to the release. Services include seniors’ activities, child care, support for people with disabilities and health education. The grants help people access critical services that have seen a spike in demand since the pandemic, including food banks, shelters, mental health and addictions counselling, and services for women’s transition.

Powell River Child, Youth and Family Services received $62,000 for the youth resource centre and $15,000 for the parenting centre and library.

Powell River Therapeutic Riding Association received $40,000.

Powell River Action Centre Society received $30,000 for feeding the community.

Senior Citizens Association of BC Branch 49 received $25,000 for activities.

Powell River Brain Injury Society received $18,000 for innovative outreach through nutrition, cooking and gardening, $7,500 for outreach services, $5,000 for community awareness, $5,000 for creative expressions, $4,000 for cognitive enhancement supports and $4,000 for psychosocial support.

Club Bon Accueil received $12,000 for youth programs.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 164 received $12,000 for its community donation program.

Powell River Miklat Recovery House Society received $10,000 for its residential treatment program.

Lift Community Services of qathet Society received $8,000 for community justice.

Powell River’s 22 Red Knight Squadron Air Cadets received $3,500.

According to the release, the community gaming grants program distributes $140 million worth of grants annually to not-for-profit organizations across BC that improve and enrich the lives of people and communities. These include sports, arts, environmental, quality of life, and health and safety organizations.
