Just after 11 am on Thursday, May 4, a van crashed into a medical office on Marine Avenue.
A witness sitting in the doctor’s office said, “I turned and saw a person parallel parking [outside the window] and then I turned back around to look at my phone and stopped watching because it seemed like they parked successfully. “Then there was a huge crash.”
Bystanders looked on in disbelief as the van backed up into the building, causing bricks to break off and crumble.
Luckily no one in the medical office or on the sidewalk was hurt in the incident. The state of the driver of the van is unknown at the moment.
Fire chief and director of emergency services for Powell River Terry Peters stated that “our crews did respond to an unfortunate event, it was a classic incident of hitting the gas instead of the brake.”
Peters and the fire crew didn’t witness the accident, but when they showed up, saw that the van had jumped the curb into the building.
“Some of the brick façade was damaged, and we blocked traffic until that was all dealt with and left the scene,” said Peters.
He added that the ambulance service was there and would have dealt with any injuries at the scene. He doesn’t believe at this time that anyone was hurt.
