Powell River Curling Club mural in progress

Experienced local artist paints vibrant colours on drab wall

An artist call-out from Powell River Curling Club ended on June 30, 2023, and a much anticipated choice has been made.

Internationally exhibited local artist Luke Ramsey is currently in the process of painting a colourful piece on the 20-foot high, 150-foot in length wall on the side of the club located at 5750 Crown Avenue, in the neighbourhood of Cranberry.

“After the mural request for proposal deadline ended we had four artists who had submitted designs to consider,” said past-president and now funding director (grant writer) Don Mitchinson.

“After evaluation done by a review committee consisting of two qathet Art members and two Powell River Curling Club directors, the final selection was submitted to the board of directors for approval.”

The winning bid was from Ramsey, an artist based in the qathet region who has worked for many years in the public art realm. He also has artworks in collections with the City of Seattle and the Canadian Embassy in El Salvador.

“The artist was selected because of a combination of the artist's mural experience, as well as the vibrancy and timelessness of his proposed design,” said Mitchinson. “Two other artists were also shortlisted and received a stipend from qathet Art.”

In the past, Ramsey has worked on multiple large mural projects, including a joint effort on the back wall of Powell River Public Library with another prolific local artist, Meghan Hildebrand.

“The work in progress can be viewed at the curling club from outside the worksite during August,” said Mitchinson. “Barring weather complications, it should be completed by the first week of September.”

There may be a grand opening event in the works but that will be decided at a later date.
