Pianist a featured performer at qathet performing arts concert

Pianist Edward Duan will perform during the qathet Festival of the Performing Arts Collaboration Concert on February 28.

Members of the audience for the Collaboration Concert on Friday, February 28, in Evergreen Theatre at Powell River Recreation Complex are in for a special musical treat.

The concert, which begins at 7 pm, is part of the 81st annual qathet Festival of the Performing Arts. Entry is by donation.

Edward Duan,17, a Grade 12 student, is the piano soloist for "Rhapsody in Blue", which St. George’s Senior Concert Band will perform in the final set of the evening.

Duan has been involved in the band program and wind ensemble as a tuba player. He also will be playing tuba with the senior concert band during its tour of Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast. In addition, Duan, along with some other students, will play violin with qathet Symphony Orchestra, which is part of the concert, as is qathet Concert Band. 

Duan was born in Vancouver and began playing the piano at the age of four. Recognized for his expressive and refined playing, he has won many top prizes in regional and national competitions. He was the recipient of the gold medal for the highest mark in British Columbia for his grades 8, 9, and ARCT Royal Conservatory of Music piano exams. 

In 2018, Edward appeared as soloist with Vancouver Academy of Music Orchestra at the Orpheum Theatre as winner of its concerto competition.

As first place winner of the Crescendo International Music Competition, he performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2022. The following year, he qualified for the national Canadian Federation of Music Teachers Association competition, where he was awarded first prize and additional prizes for his interpretations of Bach and Canadian works.
