PHOTOS: qathet Regional District resource-recovery centre

Pilot snaps pictures of the new facility, which is taking shape on the site of the former waste-incinerator operated by City of Powell River

Recent aerial photos [above], taken and submitted by local pilot Tye Leishman this past weekend, show how different the landscape looks at qathet Regional District’s resource-recovery centre since the Peak published pictures and a video from above the construction site in August of 2023.

The following month, in late September, Peak reporter Paul Galinski was taken on a tour of the facility. At that time, full operation was scheduled for mid-2024.

The site will have four allowable end uses, according to information provided during the tour, including an overflow parking for Willingdon Beach functions, botanical gardens, public trails and the resource-recovery centre and transfer station.

In July of 2016, the regional district announced it had received a $6-million grant from the federal government to clean up the former waste-incinerator site near Willingdon Beach and build a resource-recovery centre.
