INSPIRATIONAL SPEAKER: David Roche will be in attendance at an anti-bullying film presentation at Patricia Theatre on Wednesday, February 22.

A special presentation for National Anti-Bullying Day, or Pink Shirt Day, on February 22 is being hosted by inclusion Powell River at Patricia Theatre.

Special guest David Roche will be in attendance for Love at Second Sight, an educational video that transforms attitudes about appearance and encourages students to accept themselves and others. Its focus is on difference and belonging, judgment and inclusion.

“David Roche’s message aligns with inclusion Powell River’s mission of creating a community where everyone belongs, by supporting and engaging people of all ages and abilities,” said inclusion CEO Corinna Curtis. “We are so honoured to have the opportunity to have him present in our community to share his story.”

Roche has spoken in this community in the past and his words always have a dramatic impact on his audiences. An inspirational humourist, keynote speaker and performer, he has transformed his personal challenge of living with a facial difference into a message that has uplifted and delighted audiences around the world.

After receiving the Order of Canada last year for his contributions to the field of disability arts, Roche told CBC’s The Current, “Everybody has a place inside themselves where they feel disfigured, ashamed, body shamed, stupid, fat, et cetera.

“With a face like I have, I am forced to deal with it. I can’t fake it. That’s why it’s a gift. I had to go inside and find that self-confidence. And you know what? Everybody does.”

Students in local schools and employees in businesses and organizations are encouraged to wear pink shirts on February 22 to reflect their personal stand against bullying. It is a day that is recognized by people of all ages.

The evening presentation is a family friendly event for young people, parents and all members of the community who want to gather to recognize National Anti-Bullying Day. Doors of the Patricia Theatre open at 6:30 pm and the film starts at 7 pm.

Roche will lead a question-and-answer session at the end.

There is no charge for the event, however, t-shirts will be available for sale as a fundraiser for inclusion Powell River.
