Kicking the Clutter: How to deal with life uncertainty

Tips to help in uncertain times

“The quality of your life is directly related to how much uncertainty you can comfortably handle.” ~ Tony Robbins

Not many people can claim to be comfortable with uncertainty. The main reason for this is our strong need for predictability in life. Facing uncertainty can bring unhappiness and stress.

We are created with the ability to predict danger, prepare for it, and fight against it. But we don’t live in the Stone Age, fighting predators as our ancestors did. Today, we have different challenges to deal with, requiring different skills. Our brains are still wired in the same way; as a result, we respond with the same reaction of fight, flight or freeze response.

Tips to help you in uncertain times:

Consider self care

We all deal with uncertainty in different ways. I also discovered that feeling uncertain is a temporary condition you can change. Remind yourself that your feelings are normal and all human beings have them.

Some incidents are preventable

We need to pay attention to what needs to be done to prevent stress and uncertainty. If you neglect one area of your life, it can negatively affect other areas of your life.

The perfect example is a leaky roof. Some people have a habit of waiting months or even years to fix the roof or prevent it from further deterioration. In time the leakage worsens, costing you more money and unnecessary stress. So, pay attention to what’s going on in your home and life.

Stop looking for rescuer

Every time somebody rescues us from the failure we created, we fall deeper into the hole feeling angry, helpless and trapped. Although it can feel good when family or friends help us, we often rely on them without learning to help ourselves. Our rescuers become better enablers than saviours.

Fight fatigue

When we deal with hardship, our energy tends to be low or non-existent. Many of us just want to isolate ourselves and crawl into bed forever. This is when we must use our skills for endurance and persistence. Tough times don’t last forever. How fast we recover is up to us. This is the time to reflect on past discouraging experiences and how we dealt with them. Don’t give up in your lowest moment; you’re stronger than you think.

Celebrate small successes

This is the time to celebrate even the smallest victories. If you’re looking for a job, getting an interview might not be as important as getting a job, but it’s a sign of progress and a step in the right direction. Every job interview will allow you to build the confidence you need. Noticing these small victories and building on them can give you a break from all the stress and negativity you’re facing.

Being consistent and persistent in your search for a better life is a sure way to fight uncertainty.

I wish you the best. I know you can do it.
