On this day:

In 1965, Canada’s current flag, featuring a maple leaf, was adopted.

In 2001, the first draft of the human genome, which contains the complete human genetic information, was published.

In 1980, hockey hall of famer Wayne Gretzky assisted on a National Hockey League-record-tying seven goals in 8-2 victory for his Edmonton Oilers over Washington Capitals. He matched the record (shared with Billy Taylor/Detroit Red Wings/1947) twice more later on in his career.
