On this day:
In 1962, in his first year of eligibility, Jackie Robinson, Major League Baseball’s first African American player, was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

In 1986, Ray Charles, James Brown and Elvis Presley were the first musicians inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio.

In 2020, Chinese state media announced that the city of Wuhan was trying to stop the spread of a new virus that had infected hundreds and killed more than a dozen by shutting down outbound flights and trains. The World Health Organization said the viral illness was not yet a global health emergency, though the head of the United Nations health agency said it “may become one.”
