On this day:
In 1917, during the Third Battle of Ypres in Belgium, and after 250,000 casualties were suffered by Allied and German soldiers, Canadian troops captured the village of Passchendaele.

In 1993, After win three consecutive championships with the Chicago Bulls, Michael Jordan announced his retirement from the National Basketball Association. He returned in 1995 and led the Bulls to three more titles.

In 1981, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat was shot to death by extremists while reviewing a military parade.
