On this day:
In 1967, The Carol Burnett Show premiered on television.

In 2001, al-Qaeda hijackers seized control of four jetliners, sending two of the planes into New York’s World Trade Center and one into the Pentagon in Virginia. Another plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives.

In 2021, British teenager Emma Raducanu beat Canadian teen Leylah Annie Fernandez in straight sets to win the US Open tennis tournament.
