In 1553, the only child of Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII, Mary I, also known as Bloody Mary due to her brutal persecution of Protestants, was proclaimed Queen of England, replacing the deposed Lady Jane Grey. Mary I ruled until her death in 1558.

In 1969, Apollo 11 went into orbit around the moon with American astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins on board.

In 1980, the Moscow Summer Olympics began with dozens of nations, including Canada, boycotting the quadrennial event due to Soviet military intervention in Afghanistan.
