On this day:
In 1952, Bill Mosienko of the Chicago Blackhawks recorded the fastest hat-trick in National Hockey League history when he scored three times in 21 seconds against the New York Rangers in a come-from-behind, 7-6 win. 

In 1956, Pakistan became the first Islamic republic in the world.

In 1998, the movie Titanic won 11 Academy Awards, which tied a record, including best director for Canadian James Cameron, as well as best picture and best song.
