In 1876, Canadian inventor Alexander Graham Bell received a United States patent for his telephone.

In 1936, German dictator Adolf Hitler broke the Treaty of Versailles and the Locarno Pact by ordering his troops to march into the Rhineland.

In 1999, soon after completing the edit of his final film, Eyes Wide Shut, director Stanley Kubrick died in England at the age of 70. His other work included A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket, LolitaThe Shining, Spartacus, and 2001: A Space Odyssey.
