On this day:
In 1876, Albert Spalding started a sporting goods company, which later manufactured the first official baseball, tennis ball, basketball, golf ball and football.

In 1959, in what was later referred to in the music world as the day the music died, rock-and-roll stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson died in a plane that crashed in Iowa.

In 1966, unmanned Soviet probe Luna 9 became the first manmade object to achieve a soft landing on the moon. 

In 1998, Florida Panthers’ forward Dino Ciccarelli became the ninth player in National Hockey League history to score 600 career goals.

In 2002, Tom Brady won his first of seven Super Bowl championships, leading New England Patriots to a 20-17 win over St. Louis Rams in New Orleans to claim the National Football League title.
