Karen Inkster Vance recently presented her knowledge of genealogy research to members of the Powell River Genealogy Group.

Powell River Genealogy Group recently hosted an educational session with Karen Inkster Vance, who delivered two presentations on Saturday, May 11, to an eager group of genealogy enthusiasts.

The first presentation was titled Snapshot Stories, which went over how to analyze all aspects of photographs to help build a more interesting family history story.

The second presentation, Ancestors in Context, described what questions to ask about ancestors and creating timelines to build a strong foundation for a good genealogical biography.

Inkster’s presentations were well received by all those in attendance, according to Marie Rumley, the group’s secretary.

Vance is an educator, family storyteller, researcher and writer who has documented her family history for more than 30 years. She is the author of Voices from the Past: Stories of North Roe (2023), a social history of the Shetland Islands village where her great-grandfather was born.

Vance uses historical context, photo analysis and oral history interviewing to write narrative nonfiction accounts. She is on a mission to preserve and share her ancestors' stories and regularly presents at genealogical societies to help other family historians do the same. She was born in Powell River and now resides in Surrey. For more information, go to kareninkstervance.com.
