Contest searches for best baker

Powell River’s finest home and professional bakers will compete for the title of Powell River’s Best Baker at 2 pm on Sunday, March 24 at Cranberry Seniors’ Centre, 6792 Cranberry Street.

Powell River’s finest home and professional bakers will compete for the title of Powell River’s Best Baker at 2 pm on Sunday, March 24 at Cranberry Seniors’ Centre, 6792 Cranberry Street.

The Powell River Money Society is pleased to present a fundraising event to support the Powell River Dollar program. Everyone is invited to attend the contest, sample all the delicious baking and then vote for their favourite bakers. The baker receiving the most votes will win the title of Powell River’s Best Baker.

Several of the contestants are gluten-free bakers, so there will be plenty of options for those with wheat or gluten sensitivities. Free coffee, tea and juice will be provided.

Admission to the event is $10: Participants will receive PR$10 in small bills in return, which they can use to vote for their favourite bakers, keep to spend at local businesses or a bit of both. Voting will close at 3:45 pm. Bakers get to take home their votes, so everyone will be a winner.

“We’re really hoping that lots of people will come out and eat all this wonderful baking and vote for the bakers,” said event organizer Kevin Wilson. “As well as gluten-free, we’re encouraging our contestants to include vegetarian or vegan choices, so there should be something for everyone to enjoy. Personally, I’m going to skip lunch so I can try everything.”

The society was founded in 2012 and sponsors the Powell River Dollar local currency.
