City of Powell River will make space available at Powell River Recreation Complex on June 26 and 27 for people seeking relief from the anticipated heatwave.
According to a media release from the city, a dangerously long heat wave will affect Powell River and all of BC beginning June 25 and will last until at least June 30. This record-breaking weather event will increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, and with temperatures expected to be in the range of 30 to 36 Celsius, the city has taken measures to offer a respite from the heat, according to the release.
Space at the recreation complex is being provided over the weekend from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and COVID-19 protocols will be in place, the release stated. The complex is not air conditioned, nor is the ice in for Hap Parker Arena and the rink, but the building is cool enough for people looking to find shelter from the heat. Water will be provided. The water park at Willingdon Beach is also open for people to find relief.
The release states that according to Environment Canada, the duration of this heat wave is concerning as there is little relief at night with elevated overnight temperatures.
For safety, people are advised to drink plenty of water even before they feel thirsty, and to stay in a cool place.
People are also advised to never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.
