Celebrities reach back for elementary knowledge

Six well-known community members are pitting their knowledge of elementary school subjects against each other.

The second annual Who is Smarter Than a Sixth Grader takes place Thursday, April 19 at Max Cameron Theatre in Brooks Secondary School. Doors open at 6 pm and the event begins at 6:45 pm. Tickets are available at Breakwater Books and Coffee and First Credit Union. Adults are $10 and $8 for those under 18.

Out to prove their intellectual prowess this year are Terri Cramb, fitness instructor; Bill Garrett, barber and actor; Maggie Hathaway, City of Powell River councillor; Scott Mastrodonato, investment advisor; Alex Rawnsley, junior hockey play-by-play announcer and Isabelle Southcott, communications consultant and magazine publisher.

Innkeeper and realtor Dan Devita and elementary school principal Jamie Burt will share duties as masters of ceremonies.

Success By 6 coordinator Nadine Porchetta says all proceeds from the event will go toward the ORCA (On the Road With Children’s Activities) Bus, a converted school bus that travels throughout the community and beyond, bringing games, books and educational activities to children.

“We know that we are going to have to replace the original bus in the future,” said Porchetta. “It’s important to continue to fundraise for this very important service.”

Contestants will be asked predetermined questions collected from grade one to six students throughout School District 47, based on school curriculum. They will take the stage one at a time and will receive a certain number of points for right answers depending on the grade level of the question. If they give three incorrect answers, they will be eliminated.

Students have a role in the evening. Each contestant will be paired up with three grade six students. They will act as resources and can be called upon for help if the contestant is stuck.

“It was such a successful and fun evening last year,” said Porchetta. “We anticipate the same this time around. And it is for such a good cause.”
