Brooks teams win tournament
Brooks Junior Secondary School boys and girls each won their division of the Campbell River Invitational Volleyball tournament over the weekend.
The tournament for junior high schools included teams from Courtenay, Campbell River, Comox, Lake Trail, Port Alberni and Powell River.
This is the fourth time in succession that the Brooks boys have brought home the trophy but it is the first time in five years that Campbell River didn’t take home the girls’ trophy.
In both sections, the result depended on the last match of a 25-match program with Brooks playing Campbell River. Brooks’ boys came out on top of the final game 2-1. Coaches Shala Neilson and Jim McDonald rate these victories as the best ever performances by Brooks teams.
Three of the four referees for the tournament were from Powell River. They were: R. F. Rigby, principal of Assumption School; G. K. Regan, Brooks’ teacher; and Darryl Wallace, Max Cameron student.
Five for Lucas; pee wees split
Nanaimo Pee Wees are shaking their heads after last weekend’s two bouts with the Powell River pee wees. On Saturday the Nanaimo squad scored six goals and won. They must have figured that total was good for a repeat performance because on Sunday they scored six again, and lost.
On Saturday, Nanaimo took the game 6-3. Scoring for Powell River were Don Behan, Don Simonetta, and Dan Lucas with one goal and an assist. Dan Bourassa also got an assist.
On Sunday Dan Lucas and the rest of the locals went wild as they swamped the Nanaimo team 9-6. Lucas got five for Powell River and three assists. Dan Bourassa got three goals and one assist. Don Simonetta got a goal and an assist. Robert Bigalke got three assists and Donald Behan got two assists.
