YVR has announced that its expanded international terminal, also known as Pier D, is now fully operational.
The expansion puts Pier D at nearly 300,000 square feet, and it offers eight new gates that are expected to add capacity and flexibility to accommodate large aircraft.
Other new facilities include a glassed-in island forest, an immersive digital experience, a multi-faith prayer room, a yoga and quiet room, as well as "best-in-class shopping and dining options."
The new terminal aims to maximize energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions with a heat recovery system to regulate temperature in the building. And it hopes to ensure accessibility by introducing changing place washrooms, in addition to a nursing room and two animal relief areas.
Construction on the terminal began in December 2017 and was finally completed in January 2021 after delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. It opened for arrivals as needed in November 2021, and began full operations for both arrivals and departures on June 2, 2022.
“Opening the Pier D expansion is a milestone that we’re particularly proud of. This beautiful space reflects our unique sense of place, our commitment to reconciliation, and who we are as an airport,” said Tamara Vrooman, the president and CEO at Vancouver Airport Authority.
“The new Pier D will also result in many significant benefits for our community and the economy that supports it—helping us connect more travellers and airlines to more destinations while supporting local jobs, businesses, and economic activity for our region.”
