A preliminary hearing is underway in Vancouver Provincial Court for the man charged with second-degree murder in connection with Vancouver’s first homicide of 2024.

The body of Alexander Lo, 31, was found in a home near Vancouver’s Knight Street and East 33rd Avenue around 1 a.m. on Jan. 28 after police were called.

Dwight William Kematch, 39, was arrested in the East Vancouver house when Lo was discovered, police said.

He has pleaded not guilty.

Preliminary hearings are generally held to determine if enough evidence exists to proceed to trial.

Kematch is being represented by veteran Vancouver defence lawyer Jim Heller before Jennifer Oulton.
