Two cats in Elphinstone were lucky to escape with all of their nine lives intact early Tuesday morning, after being rescued from a house fire.
Gibsons and District Volunteer Fire Department chief Rob Michael told Coast Reporter, firefighters responded to a call of a structure fire on Pine Street at 12:37 a.m. He said a female resident of the home was outside when firefighters arrived, but told them her two cats were still inside. Michael says luckily, the cats survived.
“I am happy to report that [fire prevention officer] Chris Facchin found them when he was beginning his investigation,” says Michael. “We were pleasantly surprised.”
Michael said when firefighters arrived, the single-family home had flames showing through the roof and it took 21 firefighters, including four from Roberts Creek Volunteer Fire Department, working until 5 a.m., to get the fire extinguished. As well, the fire was attended by five apparatus trucks and three service vehicles.
“They worked really hard last night and I was really impressed as well, with the cooperation and coordination between the mutual-aid partners,” said Michael “It seems like joint efforts are helping in seamless operations between different departments.”
Michael wanted to thank all of the volunteer firefights who pulled together to get the fire under control. He notes many of the members worked until 5 a.m. and then had to get ready to go straight to their day jobs.
“I just really want to highlight that these are volunteers, and then they worked through the night, and they're all at work now,” says Michael. “I’m sure many of them will be quite exhausted by the end of the day.”
