On this day:
In 1865, United States president Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth at a theatre in Washington, DC. Lincoln died the next day.

In 1912, the ocean liner Titanic collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean just before midnight. The ship sank two hours and 40 minutes later; more than 1,500 people who were aboard died.

In 1928, in their second National Hockey League season, New York Rangers defeated Montreal Maroons 2-1 in game five of the Stanley Cup final to win the series 3-2.

In 1969, Montreal Expos beat St. Louis Cardinals 8-7 at home. It was the first regular season Major League Baseball game played outside of the United States.
