Approaching the one-year mark in business, Powell River Heating and Air Conditioning owners Peter Bordignon and Gary Slootweg agree that support from Powell River residents has far exceeded expectations since the company’s official opening on January 3.

“We want to thank all of our customers for a great first year,” says Peter. “We look forward to continuing to build our business and earning the trust of all Powell River residents.”

Success has led to expansion and the addition of new members to the team of technicians and office staff, which already includes Gary, a ticketed gas fitter, and Peter, a journeyman HVAC and refrigeration technician and gas fitter.

"We now have Dan Holmes, a TECA-certified and ticketed sheet-metal technician," says Gary. “With over 35 years of experience, Dan brings a varied background of technical expertise to the business. He designs and builds all of our duct work in-house, and he’s also a certified gas fitter"

Peter and Gary, who share 36 years of combined experience, ensure a ticketed technician is always on hand for all installations to provide the most professional and reliable service for customers.

“We’re all qualified for the work we are doing; pulling permits is a must, especially for gas work, a ticket is required,” says Peter. “If you’re not sure, ask to see the contractor’s certifications.”

The company also supports training opportunities for employees. Gas fitting and refrigeration apprentice Hank Upton recently joined as its newest member after working in the field for more than three years.

“We’re sending Hank to school in January,” says Peter. “He’s a huge addition to our team; getting him his ticket is our top priority.”

With almost two years in the industry, receptionist Erin MacLean fit in seamlessly, and offers more than just front-office experience.

“On top of office work, she actually gets out there on the job site,” says Gary. “She has the gift of a tradesperson, which makes her invaluable, and multitalented.”

Bookkeeper Megan Thistle completes the staff.

"We rely on Megan to keep our books organized,” says Gary.

Powell River Heating and Air Conditioning is expanding more into the commercial world. With a stronger core of team members, the opportunity to serve the community grows.

“With bigger equipment we have a separate contractor licence that is required and it is good for customers to know there is more than one option in town,” says Peter. “Although it is our responsibility to be realistic about the workload we can take on, scheduling well in advance is a good idea.”

In addition to maintaining all makes and models of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for older homes, new builds or businesses, the company recently became the dealer for Carrier brand products.

“We include a five-year labour warranty with every new Carrier residential installation, on top of manufacturers’ parts warranties,” says Gary, “so if something goes wrong prematurely, customers won’t be paying out of pocket,”

Customers also have the option to upgrade to a 10-year labour warranty.

“Our labour warranties are third party and stay with the equipment; nobody else in town offers that,” says Peter. “If a customer sells their house, it is transferable to the new owner.”

Locally owned and operated, Powell River Heating and Air Conditioning is also fully certified, bonded and insured, and provides 24-hour emergency service.

“There is no smoke and mirrors with us,” says Gary, “and no truck or fuel charges, either.”

As a further service, Gary and Peter make sure customers are aware of all current rebate opportunities from Fortis and BC Hydro.

“We let customers know what’s out there and help them with the paperwork,” says Gary.

Looking ahead to the new year, the partners say helping new and existing customers by offering reliable service and honest pricing remains the priority.

“We appreciate all the support,” says Peter, “and wish everyone in Powell River a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.”
