Guns and drugs
Observing a vehicle being driven erratically led Powell River RCMP members to a seizure of drugs and weapons.
Constable Kerri Chard said while police officers were travelling in an unmarked police vehicle southbound on Highway 101 near Wildwood, they saw a vehicle behind them crossing the centre line several times. "Police pulled to the side of the road to allow the suspicious vehicle to pass them," she said. "Police followed the vehicle for a short distance and then conducted a traffic stop in order to check the occupants of the vehicle.
"Police immediately discovered an overpowering odour of marijuana inside the vehicle and the two occupants, a 26-year-old male and a 23-year-old female were detained in police custody."
A search of the vehicle revealed marijuana trimmings throughout, as well as a combination of live and spent ammunition for a handgun, Chard said. Further investigation led police to obtain and execute a search warrant at a log cabin located at Paradise Cove near Saltery Bay, where they seized a handgun, body armour, ammunition, crossbows and marijuana.
Following a bail hearing, Jason Chornobay, of Langley, and Soleil Brisson, of Surrey, were released from custody and are charged with possession of a prohibited firearm, possession of an unauthorized weapon, and possession of a controlled substance. Chard said both have been placed on strict conditions, including a daily curfew of 7 am to 7 pm. They are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, November 4.
Moorage fees
City of Powell River councillors are expected to consider the following recommendations at the November 5 council meeting:
• To increase moorage rates at both the north and south harbours by approximately three per cent. The rate for a 26-foot boat in the north harbour would increase by $4.42 for a monthly rate of $118.82. The rate for a 26-foot pleasure craft in the south harbour would increase by $3.17 for a monthly rate of $99.85.
• To impose latecomer charges for three properties on Manson Avenue and Collingwood Place which have benefited from an extended roadway, part of a subdivision along Collingwood Place.
