A major food drive named Harvest the Pearl will be held this Saturday, November 7, between 10 am and 1 pm.

Craig Dunbar, representing Investors Group, appeared at the October 15 City of Powell River council meeting to provide information about the project. He said every year Investors Group runs a national campaign called Food for Thought, to collect donations for food banks across Canada. “This year our region has taken this initiative a step further and launched a local campaign called Harvest the Pearl,” he said.

A number of local businesses are supporting the campaign.

A paper grocery bag supplied by Quality Foods will be distributed in the Weekend Shopper to homes within the city limits on Friday, November 6. Residents are asked to fill the bags with non-perishable food items and leave the bags at their property lines. Volunteers will drive around streets to collect the bags on Saturday.

City council approved the operational services division supplying city equipment to be operated by qualified CUPE (Canadian Union of Public Employees) Local 798 employees for the drive.

“We’re looking forward to teaming up with Investors Group and other community-minded organizations to make this happen,” said Bruce Robertson, manager of Quality Foods. “In the short time QF has been in the area, we’ve seen first-hand that Powell River residents are very supportive and willing to participate in projects that involve helping others.

“Being in the food industry, we have a long and successful history with helping local food banks. The Harvest the Pearl program fits nicely with our way of doing things and complements our Buy-a-Bag program at the store.”

There will also be drop-off locations at Investors Group and Quality Foods in Crossroads Village Shopping Centre, Myrtle Point Golf Course and Lund Hotel for those residents outside the city boundaries who are welcome to use regular bags.

“As a new resident of Powell River, I’ve been greatly impressed by the generosity and involvement of this community,” said Dunbar. “I look forward to working with people to provide some relief for those less fortunate.”
