Man waves toy gun
Suspect under arrest after incident in intersection
Powell River RCMP officers responding to a report of a male waving a handgun at the corner of Joyce Avenue and Alberni Street arrested the man without incident.
“Within two minutes police arrived but did not immediately observe the male, described as wearing an orange toque,” said Constable Kerri Chard. “Intense patrols were made while the person reporting the incident was able to call back and provide an update on the male’s location as he entered a business at Crossroads Village on Joyce Avenue.
“The 27-year-old male was surprised by police and arrested without incident as he exited the store.”
Police located a replica handgun in his waistband, Chard said. “The imitation gun appeared to be a real firearm, having been altered by removing the bright orange plastic tip normally found on toy guns,” she said. “The male taken into custody is known to police and is a resident of Powell River. This incident remains under investigation and charges are being considered.”
Chard said anyone who witnessed this male at the intersection is asked to contact RCMP at 604.485.6255 if they have not yet spoken to police.
“Police wish to advise the public that it is a criminal offence to point a firearm or conceal a weapon, even if the firearm or weapon is an imitation, replica or toy that could appear to be the real thing.
“Any toy guns used for Halloween costumes must have the bright orange tips and children must never bring these accessories to school.”

The next time I saw him was the following day as he walked past my workplace pulling the trigger of his toy gun repetitively. I didn't call 911 as I was close enough to see and hear that it was a toy, but I am glad someone else did. I am thinking this guy is in need of some serious help and hopefully he can get some. "
